Phase 5: Passports, Visas and Residence Permits

UK passport

Passports

Make sure you have a valid passport, which does not expire until at least 6 months AFTER your return to the UK. You will need to provide a copy of the main pages of your passport with your application to your Partner University, SO LOOK FOR IT NOW!

If your passport is about to expire, or if you don’t yet possess one, you need to visit the Post Office to collect an application form a.s.a.p.

REMEMBER: You need to give a copy of the back page of your passport to your Study Abroad Adviser A.S.A.P.!

Visas - Do You Need One?

UK Nationals

Turkish Flag All students going to Turkey require a visa. Click here to find out how you apply.

British or EU citizens and nationals of Liechtenstein and Switzerland do not require a visa to study elsewhere in Europe.

Other Nationals Who Hold UK Resident Status

You should enquire about visa requirements at the Consulate General in Britain.

Non UK Nationals

You must enquire about visa requirements at the Consulate in your home country. If you do need a visa, you should apply through your home Consulate at least 3 months in advance. You will more than likely be required to submit the following documents with your application:

Residence Permits

Police HelmetAlthough most of you will not need a visa to study in Europe, you will be required to obtain a residence permit upon arrival in your host country. With the exception of British or EU students going to Ireland, Erasmus students going to another part of Europe for more than three months must apply for a residence permit. The International Office at your Partner University will assist you in this process and you will probably be sent details of the procedure with your acceptance pack. There is a fixed time period in which you can apply, so make sure you know what the time frame is in advance.

In most cases you will need to go to the local police station to obtain your residence permit. You will need to have the following documentation available:
